This week from we donated $500 to help organise the 17 Nov 2023 National School Strike for Climate. In our 2023-24 participatory budget CoPower customer members voted to allocate $3,000 to the Fighting Climate Crimes fund to support communities to stand up to fossil fuel corporations.
Australia must stop all new fossil fuel projects if we are to have any chance of limiting dangerous global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius and avoid catastrophic climate change. Yet the Albanese Government continues to give approvals to coal and gas billionaires to build dangerous new projects. Young people have had enough. By walking out of school on 17 Nov, they are disrupting business as usual, and demanding that Anthony Albanese and Tanya Plibersek shift the power away from fossil fuels by ending all approvals and subsidies for fossil fuel projects now!
The strike comes at a crucial time. We are coming out of the hottest summer ever recorded in the northern hemisphere, and brace for the impacts of an extreme El Nino summer here in Australia. In the final sitting weeks of 2023, the Albanese Government will deliver its second annual climate statement to parliament and travel to Dubai for the 28th meeting of the United Nations Climate Change Conference.
CoPower encourages all young people and older allies to hit the streets on 17 Nov. Details of the current strike events across the continent can be found by clicking here and there is still time register an action near you!
