Through our 2024 democratic budget customer members voted to allocate $10,000 to Seed Indigenous Youth Climate Network’s Grassroot Gathering. The training camp took place 4 – 6 October and brought 25 young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders together from across the continent. Here is the report that Seed has shared…
Thank you so much to the Copower community who generously supported Seed’s Grassroots Gathering! This was held across the first weekend of October, and it was a huge success. We had 25 First Nations young people come together in Naarm/Melbourne from across the country, including Perth, Townsville, Cairns, Rockhampton and Adelaide just to name a few. Over three days, volunteers took part in skill building workshops, discussions and planning sessions to build skills and confidence in areas such as campaigning, leadership, communications and organising.
Our focus this gathering was empowering these young mob with the tools they need to create strategic and powerful campaigns, we covered the basics of how to campaign, from how to build a critical path, to understanding the spectrum of allies and plotting a power map and even understanding how telling your story and using social media can be a powerful tool to get your message across. It was incredible to see how these volunteers took the learnings from the workshops to create their own campaign ideas and strategies.
Volunteers left feeling “Inspired and loved”, “Amazing I feel like I’ve met a mob of other young people that I can maintain connections with and it’s so amazing” and “Deadly and well informed. Happy and Proud.” Events like this go such a long way to building our movement to fight for climate justice and protect country – thank you again for your support.
The grassroots gathering also made plans further around Seed’s Don’t Frack the Kimberley campaign. Seed is asking you to stand up and protect country from the threat of 20 new gas wells and opening up new gas that will be devastating for Country, culture and communities and our climate.
